Course Overview:
The course will provide an introduction to the wave energy as a usable resource, to the principles of wave energy conversion and to the technologies available to achieve it. Other topics include an overview of the worldwide situation, technical and non-technical barriers to development, national and regional policies as well as economic aspects and market development.
Course Audience:
The attendees are expected to have a degree in Engineering (preferably Mechanical, Civil, Naval or Electrical) or in Physics. Some experience and background in the wave energy or offshore engineering sectors will help but is not essential.
Course Topics:
1. Wave Energy Resource
2. Introduction to Wave Energy Conversion
3. Wave Energy Conversion Modelling
4. Technology
5. Overview of World Situation, Policies and Perspectives
Instructor Bios:
Prof. Antonio Falcão is Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. He obtained his first degree (6-year course) from the Technical University of Lisbon, and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, UK.He has been active in R&D in ocean wave energy for about 30 years, and has published extensively in this field.
Prof. Antonio Falcão participated in a large number of projects sponsored and funded by the European Commission in the area of wave energy, and was the overall coordinator of the European projects that, in the 1990s, funded the studies, design and construction of the 400 kW European Wave Energy Pilot Plant on Pico Island, Azores Archipelago. He is presently an Executive Committee Member of the Implementing Agreement on Ocean Energy Systems of the International Energy Agency, and is an Associate Editor of Ocean Engineering (Elsevier).

Dr. Teresa Pontes has been working on wave energy conversion for 25 years, focusing on resource assessment, plant monitoring and also R,D&D policies. Dr. Teresa Pontes coordinated the development of three wave energy resource atlases (the first being the European one – WERATLAS) and a GIS database for Portugal incorporating information required selection of wave farms sites.
She teaches a one semester course on Wave Energy, in the M. Sc. Course on Renewable Energy and Environment of the University of Lisbon. She has been responsible for the organization of Ocean Energy sessions within OMAE conferences since 1995, is co-coordinator of the Ocean Renewable Energy Symposium in OMAE 2009 and is a former Associate Technical Editor of the Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering.
Dr. Teresa Pontes launched and was the first chair of the Implementing Agreement on Ocean Energy Systems (International Energy Agency Collaborative R&D Programme). She is Principal Researcher at INETI – National Laboratory on Engineering, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Economy and Innovation, Portugal.
