The International Society of Hypertension (ISH) is playing an increasing role in terms of education of both patients and physicians around the world. The Society is attempting to not only introduce best practice, but also ensure that screening for cardiovascular disease is carried out and that the epidemics of heart disease and stroke are avoided. These will inevitably occur if cardiovascular disease is not detected early. With this in mind, a special Symposium entitled Bridging the Gaps: Reducing Cardiovascular Risk in Low Resource Settings is being organised by the ISH, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Lancet. This joint Symposium will take place on Sunday, September 26 and Monday, September 27 2010.

On September 26, there will be a series of meetings attended by a small delegation. This will be followed by a Plenary Session on September 27 to which we invite all delegates of the ISH 2010 meeting.

High level representation from government and WHO will be in attendance to hear a summary of the pre-conference meetings and to discuss ways in which they can help implement the programmes more extensively in their own areas. It is hoped that the findings of the Symposium, an Accord, will be signed by the Ministers of Health and published. It is the ultimate aim of the organizers to secure the commitment of Ministers to implement these programmes more extensively at the national level.
